A Path Analysis of Stress, Depression, Optimism, and Resilience in the Elderly

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the mediation effects of optimism and resilience in association between stress and depression among the elderly. The subjects were 191 elderly over 60 years old who were attending a welfare center, living in Kyunggi-Do. The subjects completed socio-demographic factors questionnaire, stress scale, depression scale, optimism scale, and resilience scale. To estimate the relative effects of each variables, a path analysis was employed. It has been found that the relationships between stress and depression was mediated by optimism, and the relationships between optimism and depression was mediated by resilience. That is, in the path that explains the effects of stress on depression, optimism was found to play a mediated role as it leads to resilience.
